What Is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that is characterized by the repeated stopping and starting of breathing while asleep. There are three main types: obstructive sleep apnea, central sleep apnea, and complex sleep apnea syndrome.

The most common of these, obstructive sleep apnea, develops when the muscles at the back of a sleeping person’s throat relax, causing their airway to narrow as they inhale. When this happens, the person’s blood oxygen level decreases, prompting their brain to wake them up. Although anyone can develop obstructive sleep apnea, obese individuals, men, and those with a family history of the condition are especially at risk.

Sleep Apnea Symptoms

Some of the most common symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea include:

  • Loud snoring
  • Choking or gasping for air while asleep
  • Difficulty staying asleep
  • Waking up with a headache, a dry mouth, or a sore throat
  • Fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Difficulty concentrating

If you sleep near another person, they might also tell you afterward that you appeared to stop breathing while you were asleep.

We offer home sleep studies that can be completed in the convenience of your home, as well as in-lab studies that are conducted at our American Commission for Health Care Services (ACHC) – accredited sleep disorder center in Oxnard.

What Is the Best Treatment for Sleep Apnea?

For mild cases of sleep apnea, treatment is often limited to lifestyle changes such as losing weight or positional therapy. More severe cases may require using a device to keep the airways open while asleep, such as a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine or an oral appliance. Surgery may become necessary if other treatment options fail to provide relief. The sleep medicine specialists on our team can recommend the approach that is best suited to your specific needs.
